Who is “the business”? I want to know!

Date June 20, 2008

My regular “day job” is working in the IT industry providing mostly web server / infrastructure 2nd/3rd tier support. It’s exciting, challenging, and educational nearly every day. I’m also with a bunch of people who know their stuff down cold!

One of the more frustrating aspects of the role, is that software and/or project solutions which would actually improve the day-to-day support needs often don’t get implemented because of the spectre; “the business”.

The most common umbrella term!

Q: Why can’t we change the process to do ?
A: The business doesn’t want to go down that road.

Q: Why can’t we use this software which specifically helps us do ?
A: It doesn’t align with The Business

So is “The Business” a real person acting as a liason or is it an oligarchy in the deeper recesses of IT who are afraid of change yet work in it every day?
