Having fun in game development!

It’s been a few years - why is Blizzard not selling level 60 toons?

I know the hardcore MMO players are shaking in their boots, but after even a cursory glance at what SOE’s “Free Realms” project is trying to achieve..it just seems strange that Blizzard isn’t trying to grow subscribership by selling Level 60 toons.

If there’s such a concern over the “Glider” or gold farmer companies skewing the economy, why not deal with them both by removing their primary purpose; getting the player to the EndGame.

There are those who love to experience the journey through the game from 1-70 (such as myself), but the majority of the players now probably have 1..n “alts” (other toons).

Why not create a system where if you have achieved the max level with ANY of your toons, then the door opens for you to enjoy the end game content with the class alt you’ve always wanted to roll, but without the repetition of going through the same content again. While the classes are different in makeup, handling, etc. the basic leveling process is the same for everyone, and the leveling guide I swear by makes no distinction really between classes.

It’s a radical thought, but it does open the door for pure FUN for the player. I would gladly pay Blizzard $200.00 or so for a level 60 (naked / Tier 1 geared ) toon with a basic mount and 20-50g in the bank.

Just food for thought…;)

35 years of Dark Side of the Moon

Well just missed it by a day, but yesterday marked the 35th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”.

Happy Anniversary!

Google Code University

My “bread and butter” contracts revolve mostly around providing server / system / infrastructure support for web applications in various corporate environments.

While this is a tough explanation to get across to non-webby people such as my mother, I do not touch Frontpage or any other web content creation system (apart from this blog of course). I mostly handle backend infrastructure “negotiation” between various 3rd party packages and the web server.

Anyways, I came across the Google Code University, and it’s great resource for finding CURRENT web programming techniques and best practices. There’s a million sites out there which deal with this topic, but you have to be careful where you find yourself, as a lot of the content could be more than a year or two (at least) old.

Definitely worth a bookmark at least, even if you don’t have time to pour through it now…

Doesn’t get any better than that…

Many thanks to Ben for sending me this one.

Still don’t understand why I can’t buy a new WoW account online…

As far as I know, World of Warcraft is the only MMOG game which still forces you to pick up a boxed version to create a new account. (Once you have an existing account, you are able to upgrade it online to the expansion packs…)

Why?

Every other MMOG is fine with me spinning up 10 online accounts if I wanted to…without needing to clutter up my office with boxes, manuals along with the extra plastic and ink that are used in the process..

How many hectares of Brazilian rain forest is clear-cutted annually just because I need to fill up my shelf with WoW boxes and manuals for a mere license key?

Ah well…enough belly-aching. When in Rome…
